Has anyone gotten or know someone who has gotten an urinary tract infections after having their pacemaker replaced?
My father had his procedure Friday afternoon and seemed to be groggy on the next day. Then on Sunday was very weak and unresponsive for a minute or two. I was thinking perhaps the anesthesia had not completely worn off.
He was admitted into the hospital and was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection.
Perhaps it was the combination of the two issues?
He was prescribed Keflex (Cephalexin) to be taken three times for ten days. He took the fourth one shortly before leaving for the hospital. Apparently the antibiotic is not able to treat the infection he possibly contracted after the surgery.
I assume he will be prescribed something else by tomorrow (as he wasn't given anything all day Sunday).
Thank you for any responses given!

Hi,
I had my pacemaker fitted 2014 and I have suffered many many times with UTI since ...... Never really had them before ....... My GP thinks I need counselling as he says this has nothing to do with having the pacemaker fitted ! I know it has .

I worked for the company which marketed Cephalexin in the UK and was heavily involved in its launch here many years ago. In its day it was brilliant for urinary tract infections; as all the likely bacteria were sensitive to it. No longer the case unfortunately, but I can understand your Dr trying it first.
Like all antibiotics , over-use has led to many of the bugs becoming resistant . The current situation with antibiotics is quite worrying but at least with U.T.I. the causative organisms can be easily identified.
I am sure the Drs will find an alternative for your father and I hope he has a rapid recovery
