Cycling

I just joined the PC club today. I had my PM implant on Dec 28, 2015. I am a little nervous about starting cycling again. Can anyone help me out with this topic?

My device is the Eluna 8 DR-T. I had to have the PM implant due to going into Atrial Fib. My heart rate drooped into the 30's in the hospital. Im starting to get a little energy back since the surgery. Thank you for the comments. I hope to be back on the bike very soon.

go for it

What about it makes you nervous? Most of us heal and are able to do any exercise we want. If you feel ready and your doc cleared you for exercise, pull out the bike and have at it.

If you need rate response, it may take a few tries to get it adjusted for your needs so if you find yourself struggling, call your dr.

Welcome! I think I was back on my bike 2 weeks after my PM. I still experienced the blocks going up steep hills that I did before the PM and had to have my settings changed a few times. I don't need rate response, but have read that others who do sometimes have issues as your upper body doesn't have motion to activate some type of sensors. You didn't mention the reason for your PM or what type of device you have so I don't know if your situation would be the same as mine.

Good luck with your adjustment!

I have just read your reply , you are lucky having the Biotronik Eluna . If ever you do need rate response switching on the Eluna's sensor is far more physiological than that in some other brands and will be ideal for cycling.

Don't know why you're nervous

Cycling is a sport you can do fairly soon after implant . Because you are fairly stationary around the implant site when you cycle there will be no pulling at the scar tissue compared to activities like weight-lifting or golf.

So go for it and enjoy it. As the others have said ,if your heart-rate doesn't increase with exercise the way it should then cycling can be difficult depending on what type of rate response sensor your PM has. But if your HR does increase normally with exercise then this will not be an issue and cycling will be fine.

No need to be anxious. As others have suggested, cycling is an activity that readily lends itself to a return to normal activity. Had PM installed March 2014 after total heart block. Cycled the Alps/Dolomites 6-8 weeks after implantation following further heart tests and discussions with cardiologist. Wouldn't suggest the same approach unless you're an obsessive on two wheels like myself. Message is that with a little caution it is possible to resume cycling within a couple of weeks and pick up the level of effort without ill effects. Main downside for me was the tendency to overprotect the left arm from excessive movement for the first 12 weeks after implant that lead to a frozen shoulder/bursitis that took a month or two to overcome with physio and cortisone treatment. Go for it but be guided by how you feel, how your heart is responding to increased effort and due consideration of the advice and support you get from your medicos. everyone's situation is different.

....keep your gearing low.....stay out of the hills ...don't ride 'out of the saddle'...

IE..Don't compromise your leads.

Happy cycling !
