Family support regarding pacemakers and up coming surgery

Hi,

I am new to this so please bear with me. I am dating a lady that has a pacemaker and is soon to have surgery to remove the device from the left hand side of her chest to the right.  I have been trying to find a platform to get the view of other people close to someone with a pacemaker as struggling at times to manage thoughts, feelings and emotions around the upcoming surgery. Any ideas please? Thanks A

Don't worry about her surgery

Even just here in the UK they do more than 40,000 of these operations a year, so its very familiar surgery and I am sure she will be soon back to normal.  Fitting a pacemaker is quick, easy, and routine. As long as good care is taken to keep the wound safe and clean after it should heal well and be hardly noticeable.  But nobody likes having to have an operation of course, so as AngrySparrow says, the best thing you can do is give her support.  Be ready to do the vacuum cleaning (things that require vigorous arm movement are risky during recovery as they can cause the leads into the heart to come unstuck) and helping out as much as possible during the recovery.

So, my advice is to go about your daily routine and forget that you have a pacemaker implanted in your body.
