Ever swim again?

I had 2 pacemaker surgeries  within 3 weeks due to a lead becoming unattached.  I was told by the doctor’s staff to stay out of the pool for 8 weeks.  They then said I could get into the pool but no swimming because the arm can’t be raised over my shoulder level.  Will I ever be able to swim again?  Slow paced laps not racing.

After the 8 weeks you should be able to swim again. No movement over shoulder level is just until we heal, not forever.

everything and more

Yes you will be able to swim again and everything else you used to do and maybe some more things you might not have been able to do.

The recovery time is relatively short compared to the long run between this one and the next one.

Swimming. and the Pacemaker Games?

Swam a mile yesterday. I swim a mile about 3 times per week.

I do front crawl- arms fully extended. Never had any trouble. I just waited for the scar to be fully formed and waterproof ( 6 weeks) after implantation.

Make sure your rate response is set to fast onset and medium offset. Make sure the top rate of pacing is reasonable for your age.

Usually get up to 120 beats/min.

I have never thought of entering the Olypics though!

Perhaps we should have a Pacemaker World Games ? My friend has had a heart transplant and goes off to the World Transplant Games ( and got a gold medal!).

Now there is something for this Club to organise!!!!

Keep Swimming!

I am aged 66 and a competitive Masters swimmer (pool and open water)  and had a dual lead, dual sensor Boston Scientific PM inserted 2 years  ago.  After a 4 week recovery period I had essentially no restrictions. I was permitted to start using my left arm after 4 weeks and progressively increased duration and intensity of my training sessions over the next few weeks (back to my normal  4km per session). I was back doing butterfly after 6 weeks (presumably the riskiest of strokes with a PM), did my first open water swim race after 9 weeks and my first pool competition after 11 weeks (and set an Australian National record in the 400m Free in my age group).  So…. you should have no problem getting back to your swimming and hopefully enjoying even more than you did before!
