Alcohol

Hi everyone,

I have just gotten my pacemaker implanted 2 days ago. I am only 20 years old. Being so young I still would like to be able to get out and have a drink with my friends but I am wondering if that is possible now that I have a pacemaker? When could you start drinking again and how much was it okay to drink? Did drinking affect your pacemaker and how?

I had a couple of glasses of wine after I got home from having my pacemaker implanted. Doesn't seem to have harmed me...

However, it would be irresponsible to suggest that you should follow my lead.  Ask your doctor -- a lot may depend on why you had the pasemaker implanted.

Cheers !

Have a drink now .   There is absolutely no way that having a PM can affect your ability to drink with your friends.

The only things to consider are :-

- Are you on any drugs which may interact with alcohol ( surprisingly few do  )  ?

- do you have any heart arrythmias e.g. atrial fibrillation which MAY be triggered off by excessive alcohol ?

If the answers are " No " then enjoy your drink.

The pacer is metal, it doesn't care if you drink or not. The underlying reason why you have it or meds you are on may make drinking a bad idea, but just having a pacer it doesn't make a difference.

Alcohol is a bad idea in any case but I can't really lecture too much about it. I haven't had any (none) since I was diagnosed with AF, which was a long time before I even considered heart surgery or a pacemaker.

No, a small amount is unlikely to cause problems (but the research doesn't seem to agree). OTOH, let's get real here, you're not even of drinking age and worry about drinking. That has "binge" written all over it (yes, BTDT but you're asking). Binge drinking is next to the worst thing you could do (after smoking).

Again, you asked. You're going to do what you want to do. I'm not about to give "permission", which is really the reason you're asking.

Thanks for your responses everyone.
I live in Australia so the drinking age is 18 so I am of age to do so here :)
