Hyperventilation

To Frank & Smitty,

Thanks for your comments. I know for a fact I have a lead that is barely connected via my doctor. We decided to not 'fix' it because I was functioning OK and why fix something when it is working. I've heard the panic theory and there is merit to that but this happens when I am sound asleep and I wake up from it. When I held my breath I was essentially doing the paper bag trick and it worked. But it also happened when I do any sort of excertion such as walking up the stairs. My exam did reveil that I had a bladder infection and I'm not taking meds for that. Last night I only had a couple attacks but they were mild. Supposed to see doc next week. I did the pacemaker test yesterday and transmitted to his office. Do you think the infection could have anything to do with it?

Hey Ron,

I can't say if the infection does or does not play a role in your hyperventilation. As for holding your breath, I can see the logic in that but volume of CO2 available for lowering the pH of your blood from holding your breath would be a question to me.

I say both the infection angle and the holding your breath are good questions for your doctor.

Well the good news is that I feel 100% better today so who knows? I'm taking my bladder infection meds, drinking water. It could have been the 100 degree F plus temperatures as well. I should know something next week when my doc gets back off vacation.

I still think it is the lead. Every time I ride in my son's truck I get this constant jolt just like a spark plug wire laying loose on the plug. I have become so dependant on this thing that when he tried to turn off the sucker I thought I was dying. I can't wait for him to change the battery; that ought to be a ride I won't soon forget.

Thanks again.

Sounds like you are on to the problem

My suggestion would be to have the bad lead replaced. Unless you figure you only have a short time left to live, you might as well have things working optimally.

Adding a replacement lead isn't that big a deal if the old one can be left in place.

I just want to share about the quality of life after my pacemaker, and hopefully increase awareness that lifestyles do not have to be drastically modified just because we are pacemaker recipients.
