Isolation

by Gemita - 2020-07-11 23:20:17

Hello Tracey,

I'm managing quite well, doing all the things I would never have time for during normal times, so there are some compensations.  Unfortunately hubby at 81 is wandering around looking a bit lost and I am worried about him.  I am trying to keep his spirits up and to keep him interested in his activities but he has lost a lot of enthusiasm for life and it doesnt help when he keeps seeing the death rate going up everywhere.

We are fortunate in that we have a beautiful garden to look after and to enjoy now that summer is here, but our sons and great grandchild/grandchildren live in Uruguay and there is no chance of our seeing them for the time being.  We do video chats but it is not quite the same.

We still feel restricted even though lockdown measures have been eased in the UK.  We live close to London and trains and buses are still fairly empty which makes public transport a safe option at the moment.  Food shopping has become easier with fewer queues now at supermarkets.  I just hope the virus stays in check until we get a vaccine.

Hope everyone is staying safe.

Pandemic

We've been minimally impacted.  My employer has us work from home, except those who have a real need to be on premisis.  They only allow about 10% of the people in any area, on any given day and it's pretty strictly enforced. I was furloughed for six weeks (or "practice retirement" as I called it).

Social distancing is observed pretty well in public places but other than that, it's more or less life as usual.  The only thing I've given up, really, is the gym.

Good Day

My cup is always half full.  Always look for the silver lining.  I've been furloughed until August 1.  At 71 I won't go back until it is safe.  But I've never spent so much time with my wife.  And getting a lot of things done around the house.  So it's been fine so far.

On a purely selfish vein,  I hope you, Tracey are taking care of yourself. Your comments are some of the best we have on the board.  I look forward to seeing your qualified comments for years to come.

Be safe everyone,

m. scott

Aw, thank you! I was sick in March so didn't leave the house at all. We are still laying low, only going out if we have to and doing lots of curbside pick up and amazon. Our zipcode is a hotspot. I work from home anyway. The hardest part is not going to the gym. That is my outlet! My friends, my stress relief. My husband has been working from home also, and like you we have never spent so much time together. He loves it, is making noises about working from home going forward. How about no? lol Love him, but I'm used to having the house to myself all day. My cup is always half full too, but you probably knew that! I've been painting and doing puzzles and cooking and planning my daughter's wedding and my house has never been so clean. I'm pretty good at amusing myself.

Lucky

We feel very lucky to have a home and retirement income so that work is optional -- I have my own business, doing trail design, and I love the work. I can walk a few hundred feet from my home and get on a trail that I built as a contribution to our HOA and hike 10 miles with only a few hundred feet on pavement, maybe a quarter mile on or next to roads.

We take all the recommended precautions, and there is some incovenience with shopping -- finding the best times to go to avoid crowds, locating items still not always available, and stores that insist on masks and social distancing. Zoom meetings with family and friends aren't as good as being there, but they get us by.

I'm a Vietnam veteran, and find the complaining about protocols difficult to understand. It's a small sacrifice to make for community and country, and our military and front-line workers are making much greater sacrifices every day..

We could be in this for a long time, and I'm sure that some of the changes in how we live and do business will be permanent, just as airport security changed after 9/11. We'll get used to it, and figure out how to adapt because that's what we do, and how we've survived the 14,000-odd years we've been on the planet..And perhaps we can all learn to get along better, and especially help those who are not as fortunate.

Minimal Impact

The current situation really has had minimal impact on me. I live by myself and, except for occasional meals out, really haven't ventured out much anyway.

I hope everyone is staying healthy and staying positive!
