I thas been nine weeks since my PM implant and around 2-3 weeks ago, I started having almost spasm type pain in my uppe left shoulder on the inside. I had been sore at times since the implant but now if I turn my shoulder a certain way, it really pains for a few seconds. I am wondering if I may have some inflammation in the rotator cuff and would need some Physcial Therapy. Any comments?

Shoulder Recovery

I must have gotten my PM about 2 weeks earlier than you and I have had similar discomforts and lack of flexibility in my shoulder after 6 weeks of restricted activity following surgery. It can even be difficult to rub on solid deoderant sometimes or find a comfortable sleeping position. My friend who is a orthopedic PA told me to keep enough movement to avoid something she called "frozen shoulder" by dropping my arm to my side slightly bending towards my arm allowing my arm to dangle and to start with small circles working them just a little bigger at a time to keep movement in your rotator cuff. If it continues to bother you I would check to see if your insurance would help cover a few visits to a physical therapist who could give you some helpful exercises to help you get painfree movement again.
Good luck to you. Julie

Shoulder Pain

Sharon,
My PM is placed higher up than normal to keep it out of breast tissue. My doctor didn't want the PM to interfere with my mammograms. This means that the PM is placed very close to the muscle and rubs at times. If I lift something even a little heavy or have my arm over my head I know that my shoulder is going to be sore later. It can be painful to lift my arm up to take a shirt off over my head at night. It starts with a sharp pain when I get to once certain position and then it becomes a dull ache. Sometimes it hurts when I roll over in bed at night. I don't know if this is what you are experiencing or not. I have considered having my PM moved but I am just not at that point yet. Talk to your doctor about it. I try to give my shoulder a rest when it gets to that point and it usually helps but there is always something to lift so it starts all over again.
