Delay during exercise

I seem to have a continuing issue with PM not increasing heartrate during exercise without a delay.  I walk a steep hill which would have caused HR to be 110, and my pulse is now 78 and I am out of breath.  It catches up in 3-5 minutes.  It is very annoying.  I am an avid hiker and I hate pausing for PM to "catch up"  Is there a fix for this?  Anyone else have this issue?

Slow acceleration

Yes, there is an easy fix. It's a simple adjustment but you may have to sweet-talk your PM clinic to do the work to get it set right. I just had them decrease the delay and increase the acceleration every time I went for an interrogation.  It can be tuned faster with a stress test (bike or treadmill) for  more immediate results.

If this is set too aggressively the results may be worse than it is now. It can't be set without some sort of feedback.

Catch up

Hi Bill P - in my case, the adjustment that helped me tremendously was to turn on the rate response feature of the device.  I was diagnosed with HB so I can understand the reasoning behind RR not being turned when the PM was implanted.  As Agent describes, I did have to ask for a treadmill stress test to get this adjustment done.  In my case, a higher RHR has been a trade-off - it was challenging to adapt to the higher rate at first, but now I can do pretty much what I want/ need to do and I've gotten used to the higher rate.  Keep asking your medical team to help you!

Rate Change

I had problems where I needed to walk a 954 foot hallway.  I'd run out of breath at the 900 foot mark. I could almost point to the exact brick where I'd finally run out of breath and have to stop.  As you know, very annoying.  Talked to my EP and they ran some tests.  Turns out it was a rate response adjustment.

Found out from my regular tech person there were three rate response settings that were available to him and, under the EP's order, he could adjust up to the third level.  I had another problem and they pulled in a mfg rep for Medtronic.  He had some additional settings he could, and did, make.

However, your EP and tech may not make the settings all at once, nor may they make the settings until after they have run some tests.  What the doctors don't want to do is to make adjustments to the max because then they have no other options to go to.  So your EP may make adjustments slowly.  It may be frustrating but you'll eventually get there.

I hope everything else goes well for you.

Hi there..yes this is annoying...i have had a similar issue...it took me several visits to my pacemaker mechanic to get the settings correct and you may have do this...they will be super keen to get you pacing correctly under exercise conditions....you may feel extra thumping from the ticker, similar to exercise thumping, even in the middle of the night without exercising...was a game changer for me so perservere...

You know you're wired when...

You have an excuse for being a couch potato.
