Well done Gellia2 you have been going 33 years on your pacemaker. That should give us all something to aim for. I would be very happy with another 33 years of pacing.

Newbie to the technology

These postings are so reassuring. I just received my PM December 2007. As far as I knew there was nothing wrong until I woke up on the floor of our dining room and my husband rushed me to the ER. What a suprising Christmas present it was. I still am adjusting to the idea, and I am still learning about the technology and the right questions to ask I was diagnosed with Sick Sinus Syndrom and was told I needed the PM when medication failed to keep my heartrate up. I have already learned so much just reading the postings on this site. I sometimes feel like I am still in the dark when I have to look up termonology being used. This was not something that I prepared for (I am 50 and didn't recognize any symptoms) by studying and learning about it ahead of time. All my learning is coming after the fact. I will be asking lots of questions as I am just beginning my journey.

Lon term pacers

I am not yet a long term pacer; just over 2 1/2 years.
However, just before my surgery a friend came to me with encouraging words. He said: "You'll do fine! My Mom got her first one at age 65 and lived to be 95 years old with it (30 years); with about 3 changes during those years".
What a comfort that was.
Congratulations to you long term pacers!
And to the rest of us who are just beginning our journey or well into it.

Hi All!

Thanks. I truly feel my PM has been my blessing. When I was born (OMG! 1948!! ), they didn't have pacemakers at all and my folks were told to take me home to die. Luckily for me, my heart activity lasted until 1975 when it just stopped. Pacemakers were single lead then and weighed nearly 3 pounds! I've sure watched them change over the years, and honestly I have been not only blessed with the very BEST of doctors but have had relatively few problems. Lead scarring over got me my first dual chamber, two lead Medtronic in 1982 when the dual chamber PM was only a baby. My cardiologist and I have grown up together! I also right ventricle pace and have for the entire nearly 33 years. I am also 100% dependent. So far, so good. The years haven't been without problems and some serious but, the one thing my cardiologist always told me to do was listen to what my body was telling me...and he would trust that, if I would trust him. It's worked for me!
This site has been wonderful. To all of you, promise me that you'll all keep pacing and so will I!! I'm going for wire longevity now. My wires are 26 years old now!
Best to you all!
Gellia
