Slightly confusing
by IAN MC - 2023-07-29 14:06:49
I find the latest poll slightly confusing. Strictly speaking bradycardia is an arrythmia and I would have thought that pretty well ALL PM recipients have shown evidence of spells of bradycardia.
Is the poll not attempting to measure the incidence of " arrythmias in addition to bradycardia " ? If so , the last statement " I do not have any arrythmias " needs further explanation.
Using myself as an example, for the first 10 years post-pacemaker I was in normal sinus rhythm but still had an underlying bradycardia so did I qualify as having no arrythmias, or not ?

Ian, you make a good point. I had considered bradycardia and heart block patients (the majority of us) but since the pacemaker effectively treats these patients, the Poll is for members with continuing arrhythmias like the ectopics, and the tachy arrhythmias that are clearly not eliminated by pacemaker therapy alone.
Many patients with SSS, CI and Heart Block once these conditions have effectively been treated by their pacemakers, report being absolutely arrhythmia free (or at least symptom free) hence my last category “I do not have any arrhythmias”. I am just looking for an indication of members with arrhythmias that continue to cause symptoms for them even though they have a pacemaker that effectively treats their bradycardia/heart block.
I will have a look at the Poll and see where it can be amended even though some members have already cast their vote. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. I am happy to try to rescue the Poll and to make sure that more members feel able to contribute.
Thank you for your helpful comments Ian.

I have a friend who has a pacemaker solely because she has vasovagal syncope. She has the pacemaker because during an episode her heartrate can plummet dangerously. Technically, I guess, that's bradycardia.
But classifying her problem as a cardiac arrythmia--when the problem doesn't arise from the heart at all--would add more confusion to the final tally than precision. Nope. To respond to the poll, she needs the option of "no arrythmia at all."

To tell you the truth I never even give it a second thought. While growing up it never stopped me from doing anything and to this day my girlfriend or my kids need to remind me that I have one!

If you could kindly respond in the first box since the Poll asks for the statement that "most" applies to you. Sometimes we can vote multiple times (on different devices perhaps) if several of the categories apply. We cannot tick more than one category at a time unfortunately, or have more than five categories in total, so we are a bit restricted. I would have liked to have offered another category for "Any other arrhythmia"?
I set the Poll up this morning in response to a request from several members since we don't seem to have a past poll on this subject and yet our posts are often about arrhythmias, like ectopics, Atrial Fibrillation, so thought it would be nice to gather some info.
