Member Update on Plans for the New Website and Forum

Since our last announcement at the beginning of the year, when the Pacemaker Club joined the ForHearts Worldwide community, we have been working diligently on our first major project: creating a robust, technologically advanced forum and website for the club. Our goal for the new forum is to provide a home base for connecting with others who have pacemakers, ICDs, and CRTs. It will be a resource for open conversations that benefit members, while building a community through our shared experiences.

Thank you all for your valuable feedback. Your insights have been key in developing the primary objectives and roadmap for this project. Rest assured, our team is thoughtfully incorporating many of your requests into our plans.

User experience will be our guiding principle in modernizing the forum. Get ready for a sleek, easy-to-navigate, and feature-packed website design!

Here are just a few of the exciting new features you can look forward to:

- Enhanced account profiles to allow members to customize their profiles with interests and a personal bio.

- Real-time notifications with instant alerts on posts, comments, and replies.

- Direct messaging to easily connect with other members, share insights, and offer support.

- The ability to create your own polls to gather feedback and spark important discussions.

AND we’re back on social! Join us on Facebook and Instagram for the latest updates, community highlights, and exclusive content.

I didn't see mentioned that a comment to an older post will force that thread to the top of the queue.

What to expect during the transfer to the new site?

by Gemita - 2024-08-02 22:02:39

As a moderator, I have a question about the actual move from the old site to the upgraded site.  I am unclear how this will actually happen?

Will this changeover be done over days, weeks or months or will we suddenly wake up and see the new site functioning as we would hope, with all the advantages of this long awaited upgrade, hopefully giving us all the benefits you are promising and most of the “Wish List” items we have given to you either privately or publicly over a long period.

Importantly could you kindly tell us whether you are expecting there to be any data loss during the transfer of the old site to the new one?  I know the upgrade of this site has been a massive, expensive undertaking with the sheer weight of data to be transferred, but my main concern would be to protect the data of this old site during transfer to the new site.  If some data loss is expected, perhaps it would be wise to suggest that members keep copies of any work that is precious to them just in case?

I hope we can expect progress updates every few weeks from now until the new site is up and running.  That would be very helpful.  Thank you.

When

My question is what is the expected date the new site will launch? It's already been seven months since the announcement here of an upgrade. 🙃

the switch

Gemita, as someone who maintains websites for a living, I can tell you that they won't actually move anything. The  data will be exported and the new site will be built on a separate server using that data. It's not like when you trade a car in and have to turn the old one in before you drive away in the new one. If anything is found to be missing or not working right, the developers will still have access to the old one, probably well after it goes live.

sgmfish, yes

new to pace,  yes and yes. The spammer issue here is that the software is so old it's no longer supported by the developer. Developers are constantly doing upgrades to keep the latest spam attacks out. This software is too old for that so it is vulnerable.

Lavender, we've been told fall.

I know everyone is impatient but I respect that they are taking their time and doing it right. This is what I do for a living, work with developers then maintain the sites after they are built. I've had clients rush it and it always means more problems down the road. Doing it right is a slow process. With as gigantic as this site is, as old as the software is, and as complex as the new site will be, this is about how long I would expect. Trust in the process. We want new bells and whistles like spellcheck and new comments first and keeping spammers out and all of the old posts being searchable. They have listened and that's what they are giving us, but it takes time.

new site

by new to pace.... - 2024-08-03 15:06:33

I do not see why a new site for pacemakerclub.com cannot be made.  transfer all that is on the current one ,oh yes ask us first.  That way will be all the current users and not the deceased one.  As a purge was made when the new owners took over.

I know i do not need complex, all i need is the occasioanal question/concern answered.

Thank you.  I have always understood “export” to mean movement of some kind and in computer terms, the movement of data from one program or computer system to another.  In this respect, I would imagine there is always the possibility for data loss or corruption, that is my main concern as we move (export) a heavy, exhausted system.

I am certainly happy to wait patiently this end for however long it takes to update/secure this site providing ForHearts keeps the whole Pacemaker Club community updated from time to time by posting regular updates as they have promised.

On a positive note, has anyone seen The Pacemaker Club’s brand NEW logo on Facebook?  Hope you can all see it on the following link which should be copied and pasted into your main browser to open:

https://www.facebook.com/PacemakerClub/?locale=en_GB

What do you all think?  I am not sure if this can be posted to the Gallery (because it is a short video) since I know we don't all have Facebook accounts?

I am not normally on facebook, but took a look. Did see the moving logo and then other information about hair.  That is why  i do not like facebook as other junk appears.

Facebook

by IrishToast - 2024-08-04 10:00:02

I want nothing to do with Facebook or other social media. If it looks like my posts or info can be seen outside of members here, I will delete everything and do private messages only.

IrishToast, anyone can read posts here without joining the club. However only members can look at your bio or other info you posted about yourself there. Try it. Don't sign in. You can read all posts.

No facebook, and it looks like the efforts are all over there

by PaceCahr - 2024-08-05 13:11:34

Just loaded up what little facebook would let me see as a non-Meta user, and it looks like the only thing that lives here really is the forums.

There is a teaser post I was allowed to see "ntroducing our "Food As Medicine” Series!" - that has some descriptions of what's to come, and then points back to here.

"Stay tuned each month for valuable insights and community support.

          For more information, visit PacemakerClub.com."

...which of course - there is nothing there.  Like IrishToast - I want nothing to do with Meta/facebook/Instagram, or Alphabet/Google, or any other "we sell you as the product" companies. I truly hope that the promised new features do appear on the website, and not social media outlets as the primary recipients. As old-school as this forum is - many of us with pacemakers come from that old school, as witnessed by the conversation about needing to upgrade mobile devices and apps. I would never have posted anything if I knew that it was going to be scraped by Meta/Alphabet  for use later.

These posts are publically readable, and indexable in any search engine, but google is doing such a fine job of destroying their own search results with (*cough*) AI  - that it deprecates it as anything other than hoarded data.

Of course- of the admins actually have a no crawl on the new site, that would be great.

You know you're wired when...

You read consumer reports before upgrading to a new model.
