Baby?

Hi- well as it is almost 2008, my husband and I have always planned to start having children this year. I had a pacemaker put in last August 2007 and had to have a wire changed a few weeks ago. So, obviously I will need to wait a bit but has anyone had a baby with a pacemaker? Did you give birth naturally? Are there increased risks to doing damage to the wires or the pacemaker itself with the weight gain? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks and Happy 2008:)

There should be no reason why you cant have a baby, although it can depend on why you have a pacemaker in the 1st place. I have a patient who has had 9 children all whilst having a pacemaker.

Your check up clinic and OB-GYN may want to keep a closer eye on you but other than that.... get practicing!!!!!

I had a pacemaker put in 6 months before I became pregnant. I had no problems with the pacemaker or delivery with either of my children. Best of Luck!!

Good Luck

Well first off I want to say Congrats on making the decision to have a little one. I was also concerned about this so I asked my EP, who reassured me that it was deffently ok to have children and lots of them. He told me to inform my OB that I had a pacemaker and what my condition and meds are and they will make the decision on wither I will needed extra monitoring while I am pregnant. I want to wish you the best of luck and a very HAPPY NEW Year.

Thank you!! That makes me feel very encouraged- I appreciate the words of wisdom- you all are wonderful!

You know you're wired when...

You fondly named your implanted buddy.

The experience of having a couple of lengths of wire fed into your heart muscle and an electronic 'box' tucked under the skin is not an insignificant event, but you will survive.
