Hi
allan(41) from edinburgh here.
I would just like to thank all the kind people who responded to my very first letter a few days ago.I am about to be fitted with my first pace maker in under two weeks and just being able to know you are not alone and can talk to people who really understand is brilliant.
I understand so much more about the procedure and what to expect and i would be a liar if i said I wasnt scared but I am armed with a lot more knowledge which can only be a good thing.
It would be very easy to go down the route of why me!
But with over a million people in the world needing pace makers and not able to afford them I am going to try and view this next chapter in my life as all extra and a bonus and be gratefull i have the opportunity to regain some of my lost health .
Anyway thanks for helping prepare me for my journey albeit scary it know seems a little less scary because of this fantastic site

Hi Allen,
It really will be ok. As was mentioned, be ready for a few aches and pains and perhaps some weirdness. It will go away eventually. Do take care of yourself, get lots of rest and take it easy for a while. At the same time, reclaim your life and redefine yourself as someonw who just happens to have a pm.
Let us know how your doing,
Rusty

Getting educated is the best thing you can do right now. Keep searching for answers to your questions and come here for support as you need it!

Hi Allan,
I got mine on an emergency basis. No time to think about or worry about it nor time to educate myself. I was shocked when the doc told me that I needed one. Everyone kept saying how young I was to need a PM (I'm 58) but doing research on the net and finding this sight I realized that they are many far younger than me, even babies, who have to have PM's. Like Bowlrbob said, the procedure is quick and easy and you shouldn't feel any pain. They give you a shot to put you in la la land :) and before you know it is over and done. They gave me percocet for the pain, but only needed to take one pill. When you come home you will be nervous but these gadgets are very smart..they know what to do without us worrying about them doing it. I knew very little about my problem and the PM. I came here and read everything and found a wealth of information which helped me tremendously. Good luck and keep us posted.

Sheila feels uneasy

Hello, I am 51 and was fitted with a pm in July this year.
I had a slow heart rate of 32 bpm, thought it was menopause! I am feeling discomfort and would like to know if this is normal. I can feel the pm at my every turn. I no longer have any dizzy spells thank goodness.
Does anyone have any answers for me?
Thanks

Just because you have a device doesn't mean you are damaged goods and can't do anything worthwhile and have to lie down and die. In fact, you're better and stronger. You're bionic!
Don't be scared

It really is an easy procedure. A little 1 hour or so nap and you will begin the rest of your life. Look at it as a new beginning. Now there will be some adjustments to make by the Dr. over the next year or so. They have to experiment some to get the settings right. And be aware it also takes a year or so to get back to what you used to think was normal. This is because you have probably been sick awhile. It takes time to regain your strength and stamina that you enjoyed before. But you will still feel better in the meantime. Good luck and have a great 2nd life. Try to get it right this time. LOL Just kidding. Bowlrbob
