Helping my Dad

Hi I am 73 years old female and I had a pacemaker put in in Feb. 2007 because I had atrial fibrillation and palpitations which I tried to take medication for for about 5 months. I ended up with an ablation which stops the feeling of the afib but it is still happening so I have to be on coumadin to thin my blood in case of blood clots. I am 100% dependent on my pacemaker. My Dr. told me if I get shot and the bullet hits the pacemaker and saves my life I will be dead because the pacer will be no good. I tell you all this to get at the gist of what I have to tell your Dad. It takes way longer in my estimation for older people to recover from having leads screwed into your heart and the whole recuperation thing in general. Not only that the realizing how old you really are and the part of the procedure that plays on your brain is the hardest part. A lot of people die with what your dad has because they dont have a defibrillator. Tell him to not waste time worrying and try to live in the time we have left. It takes a lot of talking to yourself and family support. Good luck and God Bless! DD
