Having problems

Ok, so you all probably know that I DO NOT handle ignorant people. Well, today we had our P.E. exam, which is stupid in the first place, that involves a pacer. A pacer is basically suicides with prompts, not the things that keep us alive. :) These actually do the opposite. Well, believe it or not, they are graded. And the brain behind this says that 10th grade girls have to run at least 15 laps or they fail. Well, of course that is going to be epically hard, and I can't run more than 11 laps without feeling my windpipe closing up and my chest and lungs feeling like they are going to burst. Well, while trying to open up my lungs and walking over to the teachers with a friend (I failed by the way. And this was 1/4 of my P.E. grade), I had to cope with the embarassment of being the first one out. I've grown use to that, but ya know. Anyway, when I get over to a teacher, he tells me that the reason I'm in pain is because I'm out of shape...
Ummm, WHAT?!?!? Oh. Hell. No. First of all, I am in the best shape of my life. When all this crap started, I lost over 50 pounds in a year. Second, I have a heart problem!!!! And he is FULLY aware of this. And yes, I know that you can strengthen your heart, but there isn't anything I can do to help the machine that runs it. My parents told me the same thing.
And I have been in horrid pain since Friday night.

SO... Does anyone have any advice for me on how to deal with difficult people??????? Please and thank you!!!

awful!!!!

by Tracey_E - 2010-01-19 08:01:43

Ok, you just made me feel better about my awful day, lol (will post about it later).

You don't have any business doing pacer. My kids hate it, too, and I think it's dangerous, but you just plain should not be doing it. Can you parents have a conference with the teacher? He's putting you in danger, and it's unfair to grade you on the same standards as the other kids.

You know your body. Next time do not push it so hard. Do not argue or be disrespectful with the teacher, but just stop. Sit down and refuse to get up, go to the nurse, get your parents involved... but whatever you do do not let some $&^^% teacher push you into something that will hurt you.

I usually ran into the opposite problem- gym teachers so freakin paranoid that they wouldn't let me do anything, even the stuff I knew I could handle. I spent a lot of time with a stop watch, timing the other kids, or I'm a great scorekeeper, lol.

Sending you lots of hugs and some chocolate!

This is what I do...

When I am confronted with people who are so weird like this teacher of yours... I have been known to be a little difficult. I simply ask the person. Do you want to be personally responsible for me fainting or worse falling unconscious or worse suffering possible brain damage? If you are willing to take that on, I'll run until I drop, I just hope you have a good explanation for the EMS crew and for my MOTHER! and I also like to ask "do you make many friends acting this way? Does this really work for you? he he. then I add... because I'd sure like to know.
I hope you will forgive me I've taken my pain killers adn I don't even know if I am making any sense.
My hubby is taking my laptop awayyyyyyyy goooood niiiiiiiiiggggggghtttttttttt

Ironic names and logic will do

by FirstDuely - 2010-01-20 01:01:42

It's called "pacer"? How ironic.
Maybe try logic; sometimes adults can handle it without crying.
I cycle 150-200 miles each week, weather permitting. Even though I am in great shape (at 59years) I cannot ride past the "wall" which is to say I cannot push the pacer beyond my high setting, no matter what shape I am in. Hitting the wall means the heart cannot pump any faster and therefore cannot deliver a greater amount of oxygen from my lungs to my muscles. This is what you are experiencing and it is this explanation that you should deliver, first to the nurse, then to the teacher, and then to the principal. And, of course, your parents most likely already are aware of this so they can, perhaps meet with the teacher and explain calmly.....
BTW, I just retired from teaching high school science, mostly chemistry, AP Chem, and biology so I do know that certain teachers are, well, jerks!!!
Good luck with logic. At least it will make you feel better.

I am sorry

So I have had some people treat me that way. I first off don't understand why you are even attempting it. You need to take care of yourself. I honestly would likely contact your Dr office. Make a visit or talk to the nurse and ask them to write you a note for gym stuff. If your teacher holds it against you that your heart rate can only go up a certain percent I would go directly to the principal and talk to he/she about how hard it is for you and that your grades do matter to you but you just physically can't do it and hate that it is messing with your grade.
Take care sweetie!

How to handle them

by ElectricFrank - 2010-01-20 02:01:22

Easy! just run some reasonable laps and then go over to the PE instructor and let the know you are having problems. When they give you the old shove off, just rolls your eye back and collapse on the floor. That will get their attention.

You might want to practice it in advance, and learn to keep from laughing.

What the heck is pacer?

by vbilbrey - 2010-01-20 12:01:52

I don't remember ever doing that in P.E. class. We always ran laps, did situps, pushups and then the normal sports (Volleyball, basketball, tennis...). But pacer? I have no idea what that is.

How to deal with crazies

by mitzi - 2010-02-04 03:02:21

While I too have a pacer and am much older than you I can tell you that when my son was younger he was a very sick young man. He would always push himself as hard as he could but when he started coming home from PE in severe pain and unable to breathe properly we finally took serious action rather than a nice chat with principal and teacher. Drafted a notarized letter that we asked the two nut jobs to sign saying they would take full responsibility, including financial, if anything happened at school and my son had to taken to the hospital. They not only would be responsible for finances but also for getting him back and forth to the hospital for any recurring checkups that would recur because of the incident and there would be a major lawsuit filed aginst the school district as well as both the principal and teacher. We also sent a copy to the Superintendent who called us and said he would take care of the problem, especially since he knew my son was not one to claim illness as an excuse. Needless to say, no one signed the document and no one bothered my son anymore. Sometimes you just gotta get tough!!

Pacer= a PE test

by AndiC - 2010-02-05 11:02:09

Hey there...I know this is an old post, but just to let you know...NO teacher should tell you your out of shape! That is NOT their job. Their job is to help you learn to love to exercise!

Just to clarify...In Texas, we have the TAKS test. 2 years ago they started giving test in PE for TAKS. (stupid, YES) Anyway, one test is for the kids to run back and forth across the gym with a beat or tone. If they dont make it across the line by the time the next tone sounds...they are out. If they get out too early...they FAIL the test!!! This test is called a Pacer. I believe it is given every other year...starting at 3rd grade!!!

Please know you are in my prayers and you are enduring MORE than 95% of the people you are in contact with. You do the BEST you can! I was born with heart problems and have always tried to walk, watch my weight, and watch my salt intake. These ARE good things. But, life is not always fair and we have to decide to LIVE, no matter what anyone thinks or says.

I pray this week will be amazing for you!!!

Difficult people!!!

by GMan - 2010-02-07 03:02:59

Some ideas:

*If they call you late, I return the call real early...say like 6AM

*If they call you early call them late at night

*Road Rage...when they come up too close behind me I swerve a little to the center...like a drunk...they back off, but watch for cops

*listen to people then do what YOU WANT

*get a note from your dock excusing you from any gym nonsense...I did it for contact lenses!!!

*I once used to converse with a difficult Irishman...very, very difficult even in casual conversation. I terminated any conversations with him. Let him loose to someone else!

I wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for pacemakers. I've had mine for 35+ years. I was fainting all of the time and had flat-lined also. I feel very blessed to live in this time of technology.
