BIOTRONIC

Hi Guys,
I am a long time member aged 86 and had my second new BIOTRONIC Evia DR device implanted in April 2013 after the last one which functioned perfect for eight years. I am feeling well and have no complaints but would like to konw a good explanation on what the meaning of the check up today December 24 means:
Due to Permanent AFIB the PM implacted is of VVI-R mode.
As mentioned above I am feeling fit and have no complaints and the examining surgeon said that all was functioning well and gave me a new date in eight moths time for routine check up. I know that I have AFIB for years and feel nothing from it.
So what does this mean?
Thanks for any advice
Davide

VVI-R

Hi David,
Let me try to answer your question:

Because of your persistent AF they have fitted a PM that ignores what is going on in the upper chambers of your heart ( atria); you have been given a ventricular sensing demand pacemaker. ( one lead into the ventricles, if you go too slow the ventricular lead knows this and paces you{ that is the VV bit] , if necessary -that is the I bit of the annotation where a sensed beat inhibits the pacing).

The R refers to rate adaption and this means the pacing rate increases with exercise demands.

Hope this is clear!

Thanks Selwyn for your very kind response and explanation which was very calming. I think that it helps me to understand my situation better.
You seem to know your way around this business!
I was a bit concerned with the "permanent AFIB" as people of my age are telling me a lot of stories about. As I do not feel anything bad and have a similar PM for nearly ten years without any trouble ( thank the Lord) so far I am thankful for the PM designers who give us good life.
I wish you a merry Christmas Day and a happy new year 2015 in good health and thanks again.
David
