Another 5K

I did another 5K this weekend. This time with my 18 year old daughter. My time continues to improve -- I finished this 5K in 29:14 (9:25/mile), which is way beyond what I ever thought I could do when I started this whole running thing last year.

My daughter, who hasn't been exactly motivated to do much training of late, finished in 37:45. She did track her freshman and sophomore years in high school, but hasn't kept up with it. I am hoping that she feels sufficiently embarrassed being beat by a 50 year old man (with a pacemaker) that she'll now join me in few more training runs before she goes off to college. She says she wants to do another 5K with me and maybe a 10K in the fall.

All in all, it was a very nice daddy/daughter morning. The weather was beautiful, and we had a nice time sitting in the sun before and after the race just talking and relaxing. That can sometimes be a rare occurance with a busy 18 year old. I think we both had a lot of fun.

Great Run!! Way to go! I'm not quite up to your standards yet, I did a 2 mile fun run with my 27 year old stepdaughter this weekend too. But with a different result, she beat me by a little over a miniute. I kept up with her for about 100 yrds then kept her in sight for 3/4 of the race. I finished in 19:34 (9:47/mile). I'll get her next time!

I'm sure you'd be able to beat me too. I have to walk half a mile to the station up a steep-ish hill and it takes about 12-15 minutes (depending if I'm about to miss it or not...) and I'm exhausted when I get there. No way could I do 5km in less than half an hour!

It sounds like you had a great time with your daughter, I love spending time with my dad, just the two of us.

I'm still around

It's 15 years later, and I thought I would look up some of my old posts and let people know I am still here. My log in still works!

I retired from running a couple of years ago, not because of anything pacemaker-related, but because I am now in my 60s (I'm 65) and my knee and hip started hurting (some arthritis), as well as some metatarsalgia in my foot. The perils of getting older.

Life has been good these last few years. The daughter who was my running buddy has gotten older, now married to the gold standard of son-in-laws, and still occasionally runs. The son-in-law, who I used to outrun when he first met my daughter in college, now runs 8:30 miles, and my daughter runs sub-10 minute miles. My other daughter blessed us with our first grandchild list fall. And, after 13 years, I had my pacemaker battery replaced in 2022.

About the only time I remember I have a pacemaker is when I go through the scanner at the airport. Otherwise, life pretty much what you would expect for someone in thier mid-60s with all the pluses and minuses that entails.

I will re-post your latest comment to the new message board, so that it will be seen.  Good to hear from you again and congratulations on the arrival of your first grandchild.  Wonderful news.

I'm 43 and have had my pacemaker four weeks today. I'm looking forward to living another 50 years and this marvelous device inside me will help me do that.
