Replacement

I know I've only just had my pacemaker fitted, but a friend of mine asked me recently if I'd have to stay overnight in hospital every time I have the battery/leads replaced? I've tried searching but can't find the answer.

Every doctor is different, but they usually do overnight for leads, outpatient for batteries. Leads can last indefinitely so odds are good you'll mostly only have to deal with batteries. I'm on my 4th pm but 1st set of leads.

I'm about a year away from a replacement. On the the last checkup I ask the cardiologist about it and his response was that it is an easy outpatient procedure.

By the time you need a replacement there may be technology that will extend the battery life for much longer.
