Rucksacks and pacemakers

Hi.I've just had a pacemaker fitted (not sub-mammary as I didn't know to ask about this). I do a lot of hillwalking and need a fairly heavy rucksack for Scottish winters. Has anyone used Softtouch on rucksack strap? And does this protect the pm enough?? I'd prefer to keep everything away from pm but imagine that an asymmetric sack or balance pockets might fell a bit lop-sided? I'd be very grateful for any practical advice or experience please.

Also wondered if there are any members in...

2nd pacemaker in right side

Hello I am a 40 year old man from Spain. I was operated on my second pacemaker for 4 weeks. How many weeks do I have to wait to start playing sports? I have seen in other posts that it is best to wait 6 to 8 weeks. Is it right? Normally playing tennis, using the search've seen no difference between having the pacemaker in the right and left, because I have a pacemaker on the right side and I am right handed. Is that correct? or have some risk.? Thank you and sorry for my bad English

Exercise..Why not try it ?

"One on four Britons take less than half an hour of continuous exercise a month". This astonishing figure was given in a speech yesterday by a Government health minister.

Wherever you live probably has similar statistics.

He went on to say that far too much emphasis is being given to obesity when the real silent killer is chronic inactivity. It's not only the size of the waist that matters ; it is the fitness of the heart !

Anyway it has exhausted me writing this...

What is everyone's age and current activity level like ? Do you feel good when you exercise ? Do you think your meds make you feel tired or not want to exercise ? How hard to you push yourself ?

80 bpm raised to 150 for exercise

This is a followup on my previous post: I am 55 yr old male w/3.5 week old PM, and my heart rate was limited to 80-85 during exercise. I had my PM adjusted today and my HR now plateaus at 145-150 during moderate exercise, which is much more comfortable. Thanks to all for advice, and for letting me know an adjustment might be warranted.

I am still concerned since the 150 bpm heart rate was essentially for a jogging pace workout (no hard breathing, 11 cal/min Precor elliptical). The...

Pacemaker not working?

Don't know if PacerRep or anyone else can help me out with this one. I went for my first little run post PM implant (17th Oct) today and when my heartrate got to 169 it dropped to 88. As I am a runner and I have only had the PM fitted because I was getting a 2.1 block when my heart rate gets to around 140+ my upper limit has been set at 162. Why then didn't it kick in when it has only gone a little over 162? I will fone the pacemaker clinic on Monday but any comments in the meantime would be...

80 bpm while exercising?

Hi All, I am 3 weeks post-implant of a PM (55 yrs old male) and trying to get back to exercise. Working out I felt a little short of breath. Checking my pulse: it was in the 80-85 range. Post-exercise it jumped up to 120 or so. This was consistent 2 days in a row. Is it possible my PM is limiting my heart rate during exercise??

Thanks for any advice / experience you can provide!

Exercise after Ablation with Pacemaker

I am schedule to have Ablation next week. I had a pacemaker installed in March of this year. Even though I was on a drug to keep the heart rate down, I was over 170 beats a minuted 1100 times in the past 90 days.
My question is what happens when you exercise strenuously with only the pacemaker controlling the heart. I run and do spinning classes on a regular basis. What will change if anything? Will I be able to do these sports and what will control the high heartbeats?

Hmmmm

What about weight lifting. Now my PM is right under my collar bone and I heard that can cause some issues with weight lifting. What are these issues, are there work arounds, etc.

Exercise and breathing

I work out every other day enough to feel tired, needing rest after. My BP & pulse are excellent yet lately when I walk up a series of stars three floors I have difficulty filling my lungs completely. This is what I experienced when my pulse was at 40 bpm before the implant last January 2012. I am getting stronger physically but that has not helped the deep breathing when walking up stairs. Perhaps daily work outs would be better, one hard next day easy. Any tips will be most appreciated. Thank...

I can run but not walk...

I'm training for a half marathon in a couple of weeks and am ratcheting up my mileage in preparation. On Saturday, I ran 10 miles. But I've been having a really difficult time walking up stairs for the last couple of weeks. If it's more than 8 or 10 stairs, my heart gets pounding so fast I have to stop to catch my breath. Today, I had to stop and stand still with my head down for a good 3-4 minutes before I got the heart rate down enough so I could speak.

I'm in good shape, mid 30s, d...

First 5k after PM

PM implanted on October 1st (ablation 5 days before that). Ran my first 5k post implant this morning. I lost 2 minutes on my time but I was just glad to be back in the game. My breathing was fine, my legs just felt weak after almost a month off. I did feel light headed after the run even though I know I was well hydrated. I don't have an upper limit set on my PM and my lower limit is 50. I've been at 51-53 all week. Should I be higher?

implant progress

I had a dual lead pacemaker implanted 1/15/13 following a stage 2 block (probably 2 weeks with a heart rate of 34 bps). After a 2-week total exercise stop (other than walking up and down stairs at work), I returned to rowing machine workouts - relatively long for 30 minutes or so. After 4 weeks I started doubles tennis again, and after 6 weeks I was back to full-scale workouts. I have increased my workload steadily, and this last weekend completed by 7th Head of the Charles Regatta, and then...

heavy exercise causes need for pacemaker

my 52 year old son is a long distance bicycler and has his heart rate in 40ies, sometimes lower and I do not think this is a good thing in many cases. I keep reading about athletes even much younger that suddenly need a pacemaker. Am I the only one who sees a correlation?? He has skipped beats and some racing heart episodes. Cardiologist will do more tests next week but doesn't tell him to cut back on the exercise. I have SSS and got a pacemaker suddenly three years ago. I am not athletic....
