strength training with an ICD

I've had an ICD since 2001 and at 37 am on my 3rd device. I was originally diagnosed in 1992 with a dilated cardiomyopathy due to a viral infection. Since that time we've discovered it to be genetic. My mother was diagnosed at 45 and died at 57 after a number of complications. My brother recently had a heart transplant just before his 30th birthday. I luckily have been somewhat stable, but have had treatment since I was 14.

Over that period of time I've struggled with sleeplessness,...

St Judes crt-d

Hi All,
I am 65 years old.
I had a quadruple bypass about 11 years ago. I got a St Judes defibulator(never used:-)). 3 years ago it was replaced.
My injection fraction had been around 36 before the operation. After the operation I had built it up to around 46, when suddenly it collapsed.Mentally it was shocking, but I still felt pretty good.
I play a lot of tennis with guys half my age at mid B level.
Unfortunately the left side of my heart was weakening and a crt-d rep...

One week from pacemaker implant

I had a pacemaker implanted one week ago and I ran my first 3 miles this morning and got a 30 mile bike ride in this afternoon. Before the procedure to correct a Brady situation, I was very concerned about taking a lot of time off from training. After my one week check-up, I was given the green light to run and bike. I am posting this to let other athletes who may go through the same procedure, that, at least for me, this was a bump in the road. I do not want to minimize the seriousness of this...

Exercise bikes

Hi. I was wondering if anyone has knowledge of exercise bikes with magnetic resistance and if they are safe to use with a PM. I bought one not realising it was magnetic but can't find any information on the manufacturer's site. I am a bit scared to use it now so any information would be greatly received.

Blog post: ICDs & exercising

I have written a new blog post on ICDs and exercising, summarizing some of the research I have found on this topic. Hope it helps some patients to tackle their fears of getting shocked while training.

tabata and pacemaker

I had a pacemaker fitted eighteen months ago as I had AF and it is working perfectly. I am aiming to do some tabata training along with a diet to get back some of my fitness as I have put weight on through general inactivity. The question I want to ask of the experts here is would this regime be suitable for me as I am also on benroflumethiazide (10mg) I was a fitness Instructor with a natural low resting heart rate previously but when the AF kicked in, my heart rate was very high, so needed

tennis after pacemaker?

I am 57 year old male, always been very active, running, working out, & now tennis. I have recently been diagnosed & treated for Grave's disease, a form or hyperthyroidism. this has affected my heart rhythm. I was sent to a Heart specialist who has diagnosed me with tachy brady syndrome. I was told no physical activity except walking, & I would probably need a pacemaker after thyroid treatment was complete. I'm concerned about being able to play tennis. Has anyone had experience with a situatio...

Post surgery

I recently had dual lead pacemaker implanted under the muscle. I was told to NOT lift the arm on the side of the implant for three months! Another doctor told me TO lift my arm, otherwise the tendons and ligaments will tighten too much...that I should gently lift my arms over my head!
I am in a quandary and would like feedback from those who had the implant under the muscle, what they were told to do! I don't want to risk pulling the leads out by lifting my arm!!
Thank you...

Magnet

Hi

I was just wondering if anyone has used a Bicycle helmet with a magnetic clip for under the chin? I just bought one and once I opened it I notice it is held together by a magnetic clip. Could this interrupt my pacemaker? The magnet does not seem like it is that big. But I really don't know what strength would alter my pacemaker. Any ideas?

I`m puzzled

I`ve posted before and this is a follow up.
To recap, 67years always sports active. CRTD fitted 18months ago following valve repairs and maze procedure. Happy with exercise but would still like to be 30 again !
I`ve always had a problem with `odd feelings` when relaxing and after trying various permutations of settings I`m ok when active. However no one seems to be able to answer my question. I`m quite happy with that part of the setting that helps me with activity but that part at t...

HR on treadmill over 200

My pacemaker is set for 60-80bpm. When I am walking on a treadmill even at 1.7-2.3 mph my hr suddenly is over 200. This happens every time I use the treadmill I do not feel ill, no sob, and not dizzy., Perhaps a bit fatigued but I would like to know what to do and what is wrong with me that causes a jump to over 200. I immediatly lower the speed to 1 mph or less and my hr"parachutes"down into the 80's or 70's. I am age 76 diagnosed with sick sinus syndrome, severe spinal stenosis with arthri...

Advice sought re meds and sports

I have posted a version of this in the meds category but I figure put it here as well. I'm a Brit guy in London. 45, previously very fit swimmer and triathlete. Competed at age group level for GB. I had an episode of VT, non sustained, over a year ago. I had a Medtronic icd fitted, 4 months ago, it's been dormant. I take 1.25mg of Bisoprolol every day. I was originally taking 40mg of Nadolol / Corgard. I found the Nadolol made me feel like a zombie, the bisop less so. I have been swimming about...

Back to hockey

Hi everyone, I have bradycardia and have had my new friend for 4 months now. I play field hockey and am struggling with the pace of the game as my max HR is now set at 170bpm. Is it because I still need to work on fitness levels or is this it? I feel like my PC isn't kicking in fast enough. Cheers, Vickster
