Siemens TEK device for use with hearing aids

Hi,

Does anyone have any experience of the Siemens Tek device (used for wireless communication between hearing aids and equipment such as a mobile phone/mp3 player/tv etc)? It apparently uses the Siemens e2e (a type of near field magnetic induction) and bluetooth and the manual says it can't be used by people who have pacemakers. But does anyone know how far do you need to stay away from someone else who is using one? I have been told it is as much as 60cms (by a sales rep, so not su...

TENS units

I have a Medtronic pacemaker. I am scheduled for knee surgery in two weeks. I visited the surgeon yesterday. They started to instruct me on the use of an electrical stimulation unit for post operative knee pain and recovery. The unit sends out little shocks. I reminded them I had a pacemaker. Whoops! The instruction stopped because the electrical stimulation system (TENS) and the pacemaker are incompatible. The doctor knew I had a pacemaker. Just a reminder that we're our best defense a...

Laser procedure & pacer

Has anyone had laser procedures done on/around the pacer site? I have had 4 procedures recently to primarily reduce scar tissue since my pocket has been opened 5 times in 9 years. If anyone has had this, have you ever had an interference with the device vs laser? My cardiologist thinks it is safe to do this kind of laser but it is causing the muscle around the pacer to be fatigued and is causing "weird" sensations and a blank feeling. Any suggestions?? Laser is needed to reduce the scar tissu...

Induction Range

I just purchased an induction range not even thinking about my one year old pacemaker. Most of the research I just did on line implies no problem. Figured the smart people in the PM club would have the best information. May I enjoy my new stove in peace?

facial electrolysis with an ICD

Hello All,

I am scheduled for my ICD implant on the 20th - two days away and have just one more question. Can I still have electrolysis on my face afterwards or is this contraindicated? The nurse did not know but stated that her unit runs on radiofrequency waves. Does anyone else have experience with this issue? Thanks

Pauline

New memeber

Hello everone - I am so pleased that I have found this webiste as it's so comforting to read about others worries and experiences with their ICD. I had mine fitted in April 2010 because of a tachycardia. I am very petite and the device is very noticeable - even the wire up from it. I am thankful it could save my life. If I lie on my device or even wear a heavy and close fitting top, I can really feel it. The worst bit about the ICD was the op.to have it inserted, as beforehand I didn't actually...

wireless internet

Hi everyone.  My father connect with Skype for the first time today through wireless internet .  He is 80 years old and has had a pacemaker for the past 8 months.  During our conversation on Skype I constantly hear noise in the background of his voice, does this have anything to do with my father’s pacemaker?  Is the wireless dangerous for him?

Induction cooktops v. pacemakers

I have been thinking about picking up a single induction 'burner' for use and an extra burner in the kitchen or outside near the BBQ.

In induction cooktops, coils produce time-varying magnetic fields that induce eddy currents in the ferromagnetic bottom of a pot or pan, thereby heating it, while the cooktop itself remains cool. Interference with pacemaker sensing could conceivably be produced by voltages induced directly by induction or indirectly by leakage currents.

Why the chestpains?

I started exercising more.. so I had real bad chestpain. This symtoms is usually related to my addison's so I had my potasium levels checked. Potasium was 6.5. So this new worry came to mind, what happens to the pacemaker in a addison's crisis. I thought this PM will beat through anything even death. Should I be worried that it damage the pm or damage my heart. I am a diabetic type 1 as well, keeping everything in balance is so difficult.

Chain Saws

I have heard that people with PMs should avoid using chain saws. I assume this is because when operating a gas powered chain saw, your hand is close to the spark plug and ignition system energy can pass into your body. If that is the case, what about electric chain saws? Also, what ablut other gas powered tools like string trimmers and leaf blowers?

Surgery post pacemaker

Hello
I received my PM 6 years ago when I was diagnosed with Bradycardia due to an electrical blockage. I had gained a huge amount of weight and was so tired and short of breath it would take all the energy I had just to wash my hair. I thought I was just fat and lazy and needed to get off my rear, and so did my Dr. I have no idea how long I had the condition before it was discovered in an EKG that a new Dr had suggested I get during a physical. I was on the waiting list for an EKG for 2 mo...

Cordless Phones

Hi Everybody,
I don't believe this is true but I am hoping somebody can confirm. I heard from somebody that the new cordless phones with the dect 6.0 and wireless internet can affect pacemakers. Does anybody know if there is any truth to that? Also where I live there are 3 cell phone towers and one radio tower. Can this have any affect on pacemakers? My pacemaker is for a type 2 heart defect and only comes on if my heart rate drops below 50 bpm.

Thanks
Stacey

dumb question

Hello all

I just got into a discussion with my wife and came up with an unresolved issue.

In accordance with local traffic laws, I use a Bluetooth handsfree device whith my BlackBerry when I drive. The earpiece is somewhat uncomfortable and I am quick to take it out when I arrive at destination. My question is this: will it interfere with my pacemaker if I put the earpiece in my (left-sided) shirt pocket.

A secondary question is: given the fact that microphones...

CB transmitter test

I just finished installing a new CB antenna on my Jeep and thought it would be prudent to test for any interference with my pacer before I drive around some of those wild roads.

The antenna is installed on the left rear corner of the Jeep about 4' from my pacemaker location when I'm sitting in the drivers seat. The top of the Jeep is fiber glass so does not provide any shielding.

So I ran several tests where I used a small pulse oximeter that shows my heart beat waveform...
