Finding a new normal

I had my St. Jude dual lead pacemaker implanted in mid November. Having recovered quickly from previous Prostate Cancer surgery and 33 Radiation treatments, I expected to return to fitness quickly once I was allowed to resume exercise. I find that recovering from a hard workout, such as swim, spin or run, is much harder than I have ever experienced. I'm 66, have always been fit. It now takes hours to recover when it used to take minutes.

Anyone have any perspective on this?

An Invitation

Hi everyone:

I would like to extend an invitation. I belong to HEART, a free social support community for runners who have been through major cardiac events and interventions. We have a mix of pacer, valve, CABG and other types of heart patients. Our members generally participate in multiple support forums, but ours is different from many in that we also organize "in-person" group meetings for members around running events.

need advice

I am a 71 y/o retired doc, lifelong endurance athlete, with aortic valve replacements X 2 in 1992 and 1999. Doing well until got endocarditis last fall and started into atrial flutter/tachycardia and got a Medtronic ADDR01 pm 3 weeks ago, along with coumadin. I am doing well and started walking almost immediately. It became clear quickly that this pm which has an accelerometer only will probably not meet my physiologic desires. It appears incapable of responding to any change in exercise dema...

confused about what I will be able to do post PM

I was a collegiate swimmer and now a 38y/o triathlete who has competed in the Ironman World Championships. I've recently been diagnosed with Neurocardiogenic syncope and have been advised to get a PM. I've been reading everything I can when I came across this site. I'm weighing my options at the moment and am concerned if I will be able to return to the level of exercise that I have been accustomed to. Thank you for any info/advice.

Half/Marathon Training

Hi all,
So glad i discovered this site. A month ago, i was training for the St. Louis Marathon and become concerned about how short of breath i was. I was diagnosed with a 3rd Degree AV Block and received a pacemaker a couple days later. I'm in my late 40's, and i depended on my marathon/half marathon training to keep me in shape and keep the weight off. I'd love to hear from anyone who had any similar experiences...positive or negative....as they rediscovered how to get running again. T...

Weight Loss

weight loss

I signed up a little while ago and I read some posts about supplements and weight loss, but Im not sure how to respond or if people would still be interested to answer them for being old, two or three years old already.

Briefly, this is my story; put my ICD 3 years ago, had surgery for transposition of the great vessels aorta at nine months old, however.

I´ve always been a "big" guy, the one people can call chubby and I really dont fit on that, I...

pacemaker frequency?

I have a Medtronic Pacemaker Model ADDR01 and wonder if anyone can tell me what the pacemaker output electrical frequency is? I am interested in purchasing a polar FT7 heart rate monitor to keep track of heart rate when exercising and understand that the pacemaker output may interfere with the polar monitor.

Thanks,
Bob H

Handy equipment

I recently purchased two items that have proven to be very useful as I return to exercise and general activities.

First I bought a MIO Alpha 1 strapless heart rate monitor. It is a bit pricey, but the strapless feature is worth it to me. Amazon has it for $149. originally listed for $199.

Second I bought an EvoShield ShooterShield shirt. This shirt has a pocket and protective shield that molds to the chest after being exposed to air. The shirt, with pad costs $59 at t...

Frustration

Hi. Background:
In 2011 I had a aortic valve replace, ascending aorta and then a pacemaker due to the severing of my av node. All seemed to be going quite well and then I herniated my L5 S1 requiring me to under go back surgery. You see, I used to be a mountain guide and was the image of physical fitness. The last couple of years have really taken a toll on me and I am desperate to get back to somewhere near normal.
All was going well, both surgeries went extremely well, but since my...

WOW

At age 71 I have had my aortic valve replaced twice in the last 20 years and I finally had to have a dual chamber pm placed last week....as well as starting on Warfarin. I am a lifelong exercise nut, playing in the mountains and deserts of the Intermountain West and was pretty bummed to have to succomb to this latest medical invasion....I was SO pleased to find this site where I think that I have a chance of figuring out how to stay active in a reasonable fashion. I am only 4 days post pm imp...

I did it!...

Hooray - completed my first 10k post pm (having done several before experiencing 2:1 block whilst exercising). Managed to get under the hour - 57.30 - conditions were perfect - sunny but cold and no wind.
I'm so grateful to members on this site who encouraged me to have the pm, my cardiologist and to the pacemaker clinic technicians who put up with me ringing them up and got the settings in my pacemaker just right enabling me to carry on with my running.
I feel my life has returned to...

Wish me luck...!

Hi all

I am running my first 10k race tomorrow following pm implant last October.Just looking to completing it - not after a particularly fast time, however I will be pleased to get under the hour (ie 10 minute miling). Feeling a lot more confident now after several 'tweakings' at the Pacemaker clinic and building up my fitness over the past few weeks. Will keep you posted with my time (as long as it's not too slow!!

Snowboarding/skiing

Its been a while since I posted although I do check in from time to time as the site continues to offer so much nformation and support. I have an ICD for obstructive cardiomyopathy and generally keep well (touch wood!) but after coming back from a week boarding in the Courchavel I have a couple of questions which may be linked. The first being about chairlifts - quite a few of them had warning signs about those with heart issues as some chairs had what looked like a magnet at one side.... It was...
